Is this flipped classroom ?

What is flipped classroom in your mind ? Do you understand flipped classroom as a videomaterial or what ?

We had sort of flipped classroom experiment last period. Here is our test model :

1. BLOG.First we founded blog site for the course. Student got their homework via blog and they answered their hometasks in the blog. It was easy to check their homework and comment those. At school we had more time to discuss in groups about their hometasks and book chapters.

2.ESSEYS. Student made their "miniessays" to the blog. We saved lot of paper during the course. There is no photocopies at all. Teacher commented and guided this process.

3.IPADS. There was much more dedication among students when they had iPads with. We gave them 17 iPads to work and let students take devices to home. Working at home was easier and mobile. So we tested 1:1 system in small scale and it worked well.

4.CONNECTED STUDENT. During the course we trained Facebook with dictators profiles and we founded Twitter acounts to students. So students started to be a connected students.

5. NEW APPS AND SKILLS. Students learned lot of new applications and skills.
-blogging (Blogger)
-use iPads (idea of tablets)
-digital storytelling (Pic Collage, Strip Desing )
-making mindmaps (Popplet)
-produce something new (Doceri)
-work in teams and groups
-timetabeling (timelines)

Do you think that this was flipped classroom ?

Mobile Leba box with iPads

Our school got last week mobile Leba box to charge and restore iPads. With this box we can also download applications to devices.

You need one "master" computer to
synchronize other devices and buy needed applications. You can synchronize and charge 16 iPads together at once.It is quick and easy.

Leba box includes also Airport Wifi system, that we can use it outside of school. It is really mobile system and we can use it for example in camps and different learning environments.

By the way this post is made in summer cottage,so we are living in the mobile world !

Teaching II World War and dictators via Facebook and blog

I am teaching history course called International Affairs (History 3) in Muurame Senior High School. Course lasts 6 weeks and after that we have exams. We wondered how would be nice to use modern tools and technology. We chose three simple tools to made more like Flipped Classroom idea.

First we founded course blog in Blogger. It was the easiest way, because we have 17 iPads in class. I put lesson material to our blog and students do their homework mostly via blog. It was easy to check their homeworks in one sight. And we had more time to discuss and have dialogue in lessons. Students wrote their "mini-essays" also in our blog. http://muuramenlukio.blogspot.fi/

We try to discover every hour one new iPad app. Students or teacher can present one if they have founded a great one. So far we have checked Blogger, Wolrd War II, QRReader, HistoryMaps, Popplet etc. There are plenty of good free educational apps available in AppleStore.

Then we founded Facebook profiles to "great dictators". In our closed Facebook group there are Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler, Franco and Lenin. Students have attached fotos, videos, national anthems, stories about their characters. Teacher is sending all the time good questions to dictators to guide them to the right direction. It is marvellous dialogue with students. Everything is linked to real history events like:

-Europe after I world war
-early 1920's
-Great depression
-rise of  the right wing and facism
 -happenings before II world war
-dictators ruling their countries
-II word war itself and peace
-collapse of nazis and facists

Our dictator persons follow us three weeks and after course we vanish them. This has been new perspective to history. Students have to think and act like dictators in real life during those miserable times. And students might understand why it was earlier really (his)story when men ruled to world.

How to teach entrepreneurship at school? Via school’s own company.

Our school’s company is called Kisälli. It means medieval trainee and the logo symbolizes three “holy” things : schools, communities and companies. They three must work together ! We founded our school’s own company Kisälli 9 years ago (2003). We created our own small co-operative company with students and teachers. In the beginning students have to create name, logo, rules, branch, brochures and legislation issues and paperwork with authorities. This was real learning by doing with community and society. Why cooperative company? In Finnish legislation cooperatives are very equal and cheap. Every member of the company has only one vote. We thought that our business will also confirm democracy education. Starting costs were very low and school’s budget did not suffer. Cooperatives are easy-going platform for learning both coaches and students. Students run their own company Operative board consist only students. We have CEO, economical leader, secretary, marketing manager, project manager and lot of workers. One year more than 40 % of our 3rd graders worked in the company. Operative board pays the bills, salaries, taxes and make contracts. They have very responsible work to do and they have learnt a lot. Annual sales has been between 10 000-30 000 €/year. Our turnover and profit margin has been brilliant. Students work in different areas : -websites for companies -social media consulting -selling different goods -summer cafeteria -car washing -dog/cat sitter -snow removing -cleaning houses etc. Benefits Our students need more positive experiences from entrepreneurship studies and companies. This comes naturally in their own company. Working experiences is crucial also among high schools students. If you get know better different jobs, you never overlook any profession. Of course students get salary and get paid. We know that youngsters love some extra money. Obviously they understand better the value of money after they have earned the money themselves. Our youngsters need lot of information in economic issues in their own lives. How to spare and how to consume reasonable? It is very important to understand where the money comes and how we pay taxes. There is no free dinners and tax-free salaries !

What education can learn from golf ?Brilliant brand.

Great example of golf brand. Finnish Sauna driver.

Spring is coming soon and all the golfers collect their equipment and gears. Golf is the most productized brand in the world. If you are a golfer you know that very well. Golf markets are full of different gears and products. You can find clothes, underwear, shoes, caps, mugs and everything with golf brand. Even there are certain wines, deodorants, jewellery, cosmetics and energy drinks for golfers. Almost everything is linked to golf.

What about education branch ?

What is the most biggest industry and branch in the world ? Surprisingly is not the media, arms industry, trade or farming. The largest branch is education. Most of the people work in education jobs. Especially in Nordic countries education takes 1/3 of national annual budgets. Public sector and schools employ millions of people every country. Also education sector needs more brands, goods, labels and products. There are lack of good quality international and national brands.

Teachers as a product

Still there are lot of potentials to develop new equipment and articles in schools and institutes. We have all that human resources and knowledge to do that. In Finland our best brand is well-educated teachers. Now we need good knowledge and skills to sell that excellent product. Teachers are also sustainable and renewable resource.

Let’s work on it!

Italians do it better ?

Rope pulling Muurame-Cremona 3-1

Last week we had international guest from Cremona Italy. This student exchange has started few years ago and this was third exchange course with our schools. This kind of international contacts are marvellous places to learn more. We teachers should offer posibilities to our youngsters to have foreign contacts. What have learnt during this marvellous week ?

1. Italians have for sure learnt a lot Finnish habits, schools and family life in general. Italians lived in Finnish homes and families, so it obvious that they noticed what normal Finnish family do for breakfast, what are their hobbies, do they go sauna every day and so.

2. We all learnt speak more fluently English. Best part of the co-operation is to improve your self-esteem and encourage to meet different people. You understand the meaning of dialogue in communication.I believe that Finnish students spoke little better English than Italians. Thanks to world's best teacher training.

3. We teachers found out that we have quite different schooling systems. Allthought the education systems were different, schooling and teaching are very similar round the world. And teenagers have the same problems and same joys here and there. We teachers got new friends and colleagues in the south.

4. In my mind Italians have better social skills and they take rapidly contact to you. They got very good sense of humour and they are much more positive than us. We could learn more about their positive attitude instead of negative mood. Italians do the "small talk" better.

So people are still the best part of these exchanges. Friendship is unique and universal phenomenon. Our folks will see each other in October in Cremona.

Arrivederci !

Dialogue and trust

Are you reliable negotiator? Practice dialogue with trust.

Good negotiation skills are key to success. Good conversation and dialogue are simply win-win situations. Both sides win and get.

Before negotiation you should practise little. Focus on these issues :
-set some negotiation goals and targets
-think through negotiation process and your strategies
-recognise your negotiation styles and strengths
-stay calm and strengthen your self-esteem

Build confidential atmosphere and trust

How you can motivate people in decision-making ? If you know something about opposite side, it will help you talk about right things. Do your homework before meeting. Better you know your “clients”, better results you get. Use your knowledge of people and human nature. Personal feedback is always good.

How we can increase trust in meetings? Try these. Be open-minded for new ideas – also opposite statements can be innovative. Talk straight – it is better say also the bad things than be silent. Listening is gold. Do it carefully. It will increase approval and reliability. Be flexible but still be yourself!

Do we need any more offices ? Try mobile pocket office.

World and schools have changed a lot during last year. Many schools go mobile and try to develop new ways of learning and coaching students. Also principals’ offices are moving more mobile ones.

Do we need anymore buildings or certain rooms for monitoring and leading our schools ?

My own work has changed rapidly last fall. I bought iPad and iPhone devices. These marvellous machines made my day. My office has moved everywhere. I find five different categories which has helped my work:

1) Communication is easier : emails, browsers, Facebook and internal school programs (Wilma) and school’s own homepage in the same device.

2) Online source of information : Flipboard, Zite, Diigo, Pulse, Vodio, Wikipania, Scoop it! are wonderful sources and full of new brilliant ideas.

3) Files, reports and photos : Dropbox and iCloud are with me all the time.

4) Connections : Blogs, Twitter and LinkedIn are great tools to build your PLN.

5) New thinking in learning : Sharing is caring ! More you give, more you get !

I can move and walk easily in corridors, classes and different places. I see often students and teachers. Probably I lead more efficiency than ever. Best part of all this is that our staff and students are learning all the time.

Anytime, anywhere, anyone !

How you ensure quality in your school ? With quality system.

Every organization should evaluate itself time to time. This kind of evaluation and measurable system is quite easy to build. You don’t have expensive tools or technological gadgets. Only you need your society (teachers, students, parents, local authorities), teams to implement, values and vision to give you a target and Excel –tool to collect information.

First you need persons to work. It is always about their interest and commitment to work and learn – never ignore your clients. So these people should collaborate and make goals for the season. These targets might be quite large and big ones, but still measurable. Here is a simple example :

Here in Muurame High School we have three goals:

1) Atmosphere (How people feel)
2) Responsible (Matriculation examination, how satisfied students are our courses)
3) Collaboration (Companies, society, authorities etc.)

After setting goals, it is easiest to implement teams to work. Teams are actually persons, who will do the job. Team learning is true collaboration and mostly fun.

Wheel of continuous development

In the end of the season collect information and results. Here are two of our goals (in Finnish) and data collected.

After implementing these steps, we are sure that your school or organization has changed a little. Learning in basically changing your school, colleagues and yourself !
